„Haunting Adeline” to jedna z tych książek, które przyciągnęły moją uwagę okładką i ciekawym tytułem, a jej treść zafundowała mi emocjonany roller coaster.

Adeline Reilly to odnosząca sukcesy pisarka mieszkająca w domu odziedziczonym po babci. Pewnego dnia wpada na trop skrywanej w rodzinie tajemnicy, a na dodatek zaczyna znajdować w swoim domu róże pozbawione kolców.

Gdy tylko dotarła do mnie książka zajrzałam do środka. Od boku było widać grafiki na stronach i byłam ich ciekawa. Właśnie wtedy zauważyłam Trigger Warning – nie listę, a cały list od autorki. No i przepadłam….
Uczciwie się przyznaję, że cały czas się zastanawiam, czy fakt, że ten Trigger Warning zachęcił mnie do czytania bradziej niż blurb powinnien mnie martwić. Pewnie tak…

Książka jest dedykowana dla dorosłych odbiorców, nie tylko ze względu na zawartą w niej erotykę. „Haunting Adeline” jest kontrowersyjna. Zarówno porusza ciężkie tematy jak i relacja Adeline i Zade’a jest mocno porąbana i niewłaściwa. Czytając czułam zarówno niepokój jak i dziwną ekscytację. Są momenty gdy człowiek ma ochotę wydrapać sobie oczy, czy zapaść się pod ziemię z zażenowania, a i tak nie może się oderwać od lektury. Wielokrotnie myślałam „Co ja czytam?!” i leciałam dalej, tylko po to, by po ostatniej stronie krzyczeć „Dajcie mi następną!”. Już dawno żadna książka nie zafundowała mi takiej emocjonalnej mieszanki. To na co muszę ponarzekać to wulagarność „Haunting Adeline”. Jak na moje upodobania za dużo w niej wszelkiej maści wulgaryzmów, a przekleństwa momentami służą za przecinki.

Zade jest tu zdecydowanie postacia szarą moralnie. Niby robi wiele dobrego, ale jego metody… nazwijmy je niestandardowymi. Po dołożeniu do tego sposobu okazywania uczuć – z kolesiem ewidentnie jest coś nie tak. Nie da się mu jednak nie kibicować. Poza narracją Adeline dostajemy też rozdziały Cienia dzięki czemu możemy zrozumieć jego motywy i poznać metody działania.

Bonusem w „Haunting Adeline” jest wplecenie w fabułę historii jej prapababki. Stanowi świetne tło dla relacji Adeline i Zade’a, i przynajmniej zmusza kobietę do zastanowienia się. Do tego wizualnie jest inteligentnie wkomponowana w książkę – w postaci kartek z pamiętnika. Ja osobiście uwielbiam takie niestandardowe dodatki, tym bardziej, że pod względem graficznym książka jest perełką.

„Haunting Adeline” is one of those books that caught my attention with its cover and intriguing title, and its content took me on an emotional roller coaster.

Adeline Reilly is a successful writer living in a house inherited from her grandmother. One day, she stumbles upon a family secret and also starts finding thornless roses in her home.

As soon as I got the book, I peeked inside. I could see illustrations on the pages, and I was curious about them. That’s when I noticed the Trigger Warning – not just a list but a whole letter from the author. And I was hooked…

Honestly, I keep wondering whether the fact that this Trigger Warning intrigued me more than the blurb should worry me. Probably, yes…

The book is dedicated to adult readers, not only because of its erotic content. „Haunting Adeline” is controversial. It tackles heavy themes, and the relationship between Adeline and Zade is twisted and inappropriate. While reading, I felt both discomfort and a strange excitement. There are moments when one wants to claw their eyes out or sink into the ground from embarrassment, yet they can’t put the book down. I often thought, „What am I reading?!” and kept going, only to scream „Give me the next one!” after the last page. No book has given me such an emotional mix in a long time. One thing I must complain about is the vulgarity in „Haunting Adeline.” In my opinion, there’s too much of all kinds of profanity, and curses sometimes serve as commas.

Zade is definitely a morally gray character. He seems to do a lot of good, but his methods – let’s call them unconventional. Adding to that his way of expressing feelings – there’s something definitely off with this guy. However, you can’t help but root for him. Besides Adeline’s narration, we also get chapters from Zade’s perspective, allowing us to understand his motives and methods.

A bonus in „Haunting Adeline” is the inclusion of the story of her great-grandmother in the plot. It provides a great background for Adeline and Zade’s relationship and at least forces the woman to reflect. Moreover, it’s visually cleverly incorporated into the book – in the form of diary pages. Personally, I love such unconventional additions, especially since the book is a visual gem.
