🇵🇱 Czy lubicie, gdy książki zaskakują formą, a nie tylko historią?

How to Defeat a Demon King to świetna wariacja na temat starych gier wideo. Nie tylko historia jest inspirowana fabułą gry, ale też sam styl formatowania i dodatki w tekście pozwalają poczuć się jak w grze.

Główna bohaterka powieści nie jest tym wyczekiwanym „Hero” , ale jest postacią poboczną, która postanawia wziąć losy świata w którym żyje we własne ręce, a że już na stracie zaczyna ze „złą” klasą, musi podejść do tematu wyjątkowo kreatywnie.

Historia jest względnie krótka, ale czyta się ją bardzo lekko i przyjemnie. Ma kilka naprawdę komicznych momentów, przy których śmiałam się w głos 😂 Wspominani poprzedni bohaterowie też mnie totalnie rozbrajali, choć podejrzewam, że to bardziej kwestia mojego poczucia humoru niż zamierzonego efektu 😅

Żeby jednak nie było zbyt kolorowo, gdzieś w środku książka ma dwa, może trzy wolniejsze i trochę nudniejsze momenty. Jakby na chwilę zabrakło pomysłu, co dalej zrobić i jak pociągnąć historię.

Mimo to, w ogólnym rozrachunku książka bardzo mi się spodobała. Jeśli powstałaby kolejna część, z przyjemnością po nią sięgnę. A jeśli szukacie czegoś innego i świeżego, to zdecydowanie polecam dać jej szansę!

🇬🇧 Do you like it when books surprise you with their form, not just the story?

How to Defeat a Demon King is a great twist on classic old-school video games. Not only is the story inspired by game-like tropes, but the formatting style and various text additions make you feel like you’re actually playing a game.

The main character of the novel is not the long-awaited “Hero”, but a side character. She decides to take the fate of the world she lives in into her own hands. And since she starts off with an incorrect class, she has to approach everything in a very creative way.

The story is relatively short, but it flows really smoothly and is a joy to read. There are several genuinely funny moments that made me laugh out loud 😂 The mentions of previous heroes were also hilarious to me, although that might say more about my sense of humor than the author’s intention 😅

The book does have two or maybe three slower and slightly boring moments somewhere in the middle. It feels a bit like the author briefly ran out of ideas on how to move the story forward.

Still, overall I really enjoyed this book. If there will be a sequel, I’ll happily pick it up. And if you’re looking for something different and refreshing, I definitely recommend giving it a chance!
